An Open Letter to Herman Cain

Dear Mr. Cain:

You have compared the problem of securing our borders from undocumented immigrants to securing a dog within an electronic fence.

You have suggested in a raised voice to cheers and applause that your solution to illegal immigration would be to build an electric fence that would kill anyone who tried to enter the United States illegally.

You are pandering to the lowest common denominator and the basest passions of your supporters. As an African American, with deep roots in the South, you should know what thiskind of irresponsible behavior and political pandering can lead to.

In response to widespread outrage over the sheer ignorance and insensitivity of your comments you said:  "There are some things you just have to take tongue-in-cheek, and not make a big deal out of it."    Mr. Cain, running for President of the United States is not one of those things.

Best wishes for a short campaign,

Nick Hentoff
